Can I use regular mineral oil or cooking oil to prevent water from rotting my wood fence?

I understand that it is not common to use regular cooking oil to preserve the wood fence. However, before there are chemicals, people use oil to shine/preserve the “antique” furniture. Is there any reason that is wrong to use mineral oil/cooking oil?

Using vegetable oil inside is definitely different from outside as on a fence. Vegetable oil would quickly become rancid outside and provide food source for microorganisms, just the opposite effect that you are looking for. Using tar or creosote oil would be much better, mineral oil may provide some minimum protection but not much.

I have a wooden fence and I used new motor oil . Good old 30 weight motor oil from the local Walmart. Do not use burnt motor oil or it will darken the wood . Try a small area to see what you like .I painted it on with a brush . Looks good to me .
