Question by kelsey s: How can I successfully ask for a recipe from a restaurant, and actually get the recipe?
I would like to know how to properly state the question and letter. Also, what to include in the letter and whether or not to include a dollar or two to cover the mailing of the copy of a recipe.

Thanks for your feedback!
I live in Knoxville, Tennessee, and I am wanting to get a recipe from Pasha’s Restaurant (Miami, Florida).

Sending a letter won’t work (probably) you need to speak to them in person. Are you talking about a national chain restaurant? If so, your chances of getting their recipe is 0%. If it’s a small local restaurant then you might have a chance.

I have asked for recipes many times with surprisingly good results. As mentioned above, a big national chain will never give it to you but have you ever had something from a big chain that you wanted to make at home? Just ask. They don’t usually hand you a printed recipe card but they will often tell you the basics of a preparation and, if you have the skills, you should be able to get close at home. I asked at a local chinese food restaurant revently how that got the orange beef so damn crispy. The chef told me how he used water chestnut flour and even went in back to get me a box of it. The chef will often consider it a complement so ask away as long as it isn’t a singular item which is their “bread and butter” dish.

Go to the restaurant in person and tell them you got a very dangerous allergic reaction after eating said meal and that you need to know every ingredient that went into the dish :-)
