Q&A: Do I have to adjust the cooking time if I am cooking 2 things at the same time in the oven?

I’m a newlywed and just learning to cook so this might be a stupid question. I’m cooking meatloaf and pineapple casserole in the oven tonight & if I’m cooking them at the same time, do I need to, say, cook them both longer than the recipe calls for or just stay w/what the recipe says? Thanks.

No, not usually. The meatloaf probably takes the longest, so put it in first, and set the timer. for the difference. When it goes off, add the pineapple casserole, and let them finish together, so they both come out at the same time.
ie: If meatloaf cooks for 50 minutes, and p/a for 30 minutes, put in the meatloaf, set timer for 20 min…. when it goes off, add p/a, then set timer for anothe r30 min.

Cook them as the recipe says..
so if one says cook for 45 minutes, and one says 30 minutes… you put the 45 minute dish in first, then 15 minutes later you put the 30 minute dish in. I always use my microwave timer to remind me to put in the second item.
Now, If the temperatures vary… one says 350 and the other 425… set the temp in between the two numbers… for example 375-400, and add 5-7 minutes to the 425 dish, and subtract 5-7 minutes from the 350 dish.
oven cooking is about timing… you want everything to be done at relatively the same time. Its ok if one is done 5 or 10 minutes before the other..it will still be hot.

If it’s a fan oven, then no. If it’s a regular oven, possibly. But don’t double it, just add a bit longer and keep checking.

you only have to do that if you are using a mcrowave. Just cook them as long as the recipe says to cook them. If I have
two things in and one calls for 350 and one calls for 375 I cook them both at 350 and check to make sure the 375 one is completely cooked at the end of the cooking time.
