Q&A: What is the best recipe for a Manhattan?
Written by Guest on December 30th, 2010Question by Ich: What is the best recipe for a Manhattan?
I like Bourbon but I am told that this drink can be made with a variety of whiskeys. I am looking for an answer that gives a complete how to recipe and why that recipe is preferred. I am planning on having friends over for a Manhattan night.

2 oz rye whiskey
1 0z sweet vermouth
1-2 dash of angostura bitters
1 maraschino cherry
this is how most bars make it and it seems to be popular in the more expensive ones

the proper Manhattan should be made with Bourbon, good choices are a small batch or single barrel bourbons, they seem to have smoother flavors than whiskeys. good choices are Knob Creek or Basil Haydens. I’d go for the Basil Haydens cause it uses twice the amount of rye than corn in distillation resulting in a really smooth bourbon perfect for sipping or mixed drinks.
Dash angostura bitters
2 lemon twists
4 ounces bourbon whiskey
1 ounce sweet vermouth
Ice
2 maraschino cherries
Pour 1 drop of bitters into each of 2 tall stemmed cocktail glasses and swirl to coat the inside of the glass. Pour any remaining bitters from the glasses. Rub the lemon peel over the rims of each glass and place inside the glass.
In a cocktail shaker, combine the bourbon, vermouth, and 6 cubes of ice. Shake well until mixed and chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain and divide the mixture between the 2 glasses. Garnish each glass with stemmed cherry and serve.

2 oz rye whiskey
1 0z sweet vermouth
1-2 dash of angostura bitters
1 maraschino cherry
this is how most bars make it and it seems to be popular in the more expensive ones

Although I dont drink Manhattans… I am sure that using Blue Label will give it a leverage. Also Glenfidich 15 years.

Use Crown Royal, add two parts Crown to one part sweet Vermouth, some people will add bitters but it makes it taste like shit. You can shake it and drink it up, or bucket glass with ice, and don’t forget the cherry
