Question by warren n: When a recipe calls for mashed sweet potatoes, do you have to prepare them before mashing them?
Perhaps boiling them to soften them or can you simply mash them after buying them..
I dont want to remove any flavor by unnecessarily doing anything to them.
The recipe that I’m using is sweet potatoe-pumpkin pie.

Do not boil them. Bake them to maintain the full flavor

Yes, you’d boil them for about 20 minutes (cut into qtrs) and then mash them, maybe with a little butter and milk.

    Good luck!

EDIT: Ohhhh…he’s right. Baked would be even better, then mashed. :-)

Boil them for about 10-12 minutes or until they’re really, really soft, then you can put them in the food processor or take the masher to them.

Yes you must cook them but baking in the oven will give you more flavor than boiling, where they will loose flavor. When baking if you want it to go faster cut the potatoes up in slices and lightly, very lightly brush with oil so theu do not dry out too much. You will know they are baked when they are tender to the fork. Then you may mash and be merry!!

Yes, you cook them first. You can also cheat by buying the prepared mashed sweet potatoes in the cooler in the meat dept of your supermarket

You can bake them and scoop them out or try canned ones. I’ve used canned ones and mashed them and not been able to tell the difference with a lot less time and work.
